Automotive Systems Research Technologist

Primary Purpose

Undertakes and supports safe and proper operations of various automotive systems test equipment, measurement devices and software tools, for instance an advanced wheel force/position measurement system, IMU, data acquisition system, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform, driving simulator and CAN analysis packages.  Reverse engineers automotive controllers and CAN communication networks for hybrid, electric and internal combustion engine vehicles.  Prepares/orders a list of the hardware/software tools required for the above-mentioned automotive systems testing and experiments.  Develops safety procedures for doing the above-mentioned automotive systems testing and experiments in our labs or road tests.  Investigates/supports safety-related hardware modifications for our experiments.  Supports HIL testing of our new control algorithms developed by the other group members.  Supports testing, instrumentation and rapid control prototyping of our new control algorithms in vehicle road tests, as well as our model validation and data collection activities by the other group members, performed at the University of Waterloo or our industry partners’ test tracks/facilities.  Maintains archives of models and control algorithms developed by the other group members.  Prepares Requests for Proposal (RFP) or any specification required to purchase any equipment or highly specialized software package required for our research activities and also gets the related quotes.  Performs any other task as related to the above-mentioned automotive systems testing and experiments.

Position Requirements

Education:

 A degree in an engineering program is required.  Must be, or capable of becoming, a Professional Engineer registered in Ontario.

Experience:

1-2 years of relevant experience with automotive systems test equipment.
A proven ability to diagnose and troubleshoot automotive systems test equipment.

Technical:

MS Word Excel PowerPoint Other
Intermediate Intermediate Intermediate Matlab, CAN analysis/decoding packages (advanced level)

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Effective communicator with graduate students and industry partners.  Provide technical support when required, prepare presentations for industry partners.  Ability to work independently with limited supervision and also in a team environment.  Well organized, self-motivated with a skill set that includes strong problem solving and proven multi-tasking.  

Level of Responsibility:

Ability to undertake some tasks in the strictest confidence.

Decision-Making Authority:

Undertakes and supports proper and safe operations of existing and new equipment in our labs.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Physical effort will be required in equipment preparations and installations for experiments.

Working Environment:

Predominantly lab based with equipment and also a garage.  Desk with computer for software development and maintenance.  Limited travel for training and testing supports.
