Management Engineering Laboratory Technician

Primary Purpose

The Management Engineering Laboratory Technician is primarily responsible for the Management Engineering Laboratory.  IT support is required for undergraduate and graduate students, Faculty and Administrative Staff.  This position reports to the Chair of Management Sciences and may work under the direction of the Associate Chair for Teaching and the Department Computing Representative.

Key Accountabilities:

1.

Responsible for ensuring the effective, efficient and safe operation of all equipment in the Management Engineering Laboratory:

  • Supervise undergraduate student’s research and 4th year design projects and teaching activities within the labs.
  • Ensure the safety of activities within the lab (i.e., protective equipment: gloves, goggles, lab coats).
  • Provide students with a safety presentation and give instructions on proper use of all equipment.
  • Prepare and update Safety Manual for lab.
  • Manage the maintenance and repair of all lab equipment and lab infrastructure (WEEF proposals/presentations).
  • Source and procure equipment.
  • Assist Faculty and students in the experimental aspects of their research pursuits.
  • Assist Faculty in the development and improvement of lab teaching activities.
  • Occasionally hire and supervise co-op students.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Chair for Teaching to improve the lab facilities.

Responsible for the marking of all undergraduate and graduate student Work term reports each term:

  • Coordinate Work Term Report submission and marking process.
  • Advise students regarding regulations for Work term reports.
  • Coordinate and supervise Teaching Assistants.
3. 

Department Health and Safety Co-ordinator:

  • Ensures that compliance requirements are being met.
  • Ensures posters are placed throughout the Department (including labs, common areas and classrooms) and updated relating to First Aid Emergency Procedures, Fire/Evacuation Emergency Procedures, Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Emergency Lockdown Procedures, Classroom Emergency Procedures, WSIB, Employee and Supervisor Safety Orientation Booklet, MOL Health & Safety Act and Regulation, Copy of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) membership.
  • Review annually Health, Safety and Environment Policy #34, Fire warden/building evacuation procedures, Health, Safety and Environmental Management System responsibilities
  • Conduct internal department inspections annually (maintain reports for 2 years in department for review by JHSC and Safety Office.
  • Ensure department first aiders are listed at First Aid Stations.
  • Ensure First Aid Station equipment is restocked.
  • Participate on any Health and Safety Committees that are required.
4. 

Back-up for Department Website Administrator:

  • Provide back-up support for the Department Website Administrator in his/her absence.
  • Familiar with the Faculty of Engineering Website Management standards and Web maintenance.

Position Requirements

Education:

Bachelor degree or College degree/diploma in a relevant discipline; preferred licensed Engineer (PEng) in the Province of Ontario.

Experience:

Experience with various technologies to be able to set up and maintain the current lab equipment which includes a conveyor system, identification and tracking equipment, 3D printer, and computer workstations.  Strong verbal and written communication skills including proven ability to communicate information effectively to students.  Must be self-motivated, work with a minimum of supervision and as a member of a team, and have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.  Responsible to provide technical support for the research and teaching activities of both faculty and students.

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Internally, communicates with all Faculty, Staff and students within the Management Sciences Department when his/her services are requested for departmental projects and activities.  Expected to work closely with the Department Computing Representative to ensure close adherence to department IT policies, timely completion of tasks and well managed IT services that satisfy the needs and requests of the department.  Externally, this position will have contacts with vendors and suppliers and will be involved in settling matters that are critical to the organization.

Level of Responsibility:

The position is responsible and accountable for the overall operations of the equipment in the Management Engineering Laboratory.

Decision-Making Authority:

Responsible and accountable for establishing the appropriate computer/laboratory equipment purchase for the Management Engineering Laboratory. Occasionally will be responsible to hire and supervise a coop student.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Some lifting and transporting of heavy and/or awkward equipment will be required.

Working Environment:

Working conditions are similar to a Computer Laboratory environment.  Working outside of normal hours might be occasionally required to deal with emergencies, maintenance, or upgrades.
