General Accountability

As the staff administrator for the Centre for the Advancement of Trenchless Technology (CATT), the Administrative Assistant is accountable to Executive Director, the Managing Director, and the Chair of the Board of Directors for day-to-day operations and management, liaison with the Board of Directors, members and committee Chairs, and operation of the centre with respect to CATT mission statement and objectives.

Nature and Scope

The Centre for the Advancement of Trenchless Technologies is a research unit of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.  Founded in 1994, its mandate is to address underground infrastructure needs faced by the public sector, end users and industry by providing a forum for research, education and technology transfers in the areas of trenchless technology.  Working in conjunction with the infrastructure industry, the Centre organizes and hosts conferences, workshops and seminars, performs contract services, develops standards, performs research and develops highly qualified personnel.

CATT is led strategically by a Board of Directors drawn from universities, federal and municipal governments, engineering consultants, as well as industry suppliers, manufacturers and contractors.  The Board of Directors meets on a bi-monthly basis to set CATT’s direction and policies.  Direction is given by the Executive Director and Managing Director on a daily basis.  The incumbent works closely with the Membership, Technical and Seminar committees and assists them meet their objectives. 

CATT is funded by industry’s support, membership fees and income from conferences, workshops, seminars, and research contracts.

This position is full time, contingent upon funding.

Statistical Data

The number of employees at CATT changes periodically dependant on the work load and activities. Currently the Centre employs an administrative assistant, research manager, co-op student and work studies students.  It is anticipated that a managing director and education director will be hired over the next five years. CATT’s annual operating budget is approximately $260,000.

Specific Accountabilities

Provide support to the Executive director. The Executive Director has overall responsibility for the operations and for developing strategic direction for the Centre. 

Provide support to the Board of Directors and to the Committees Chairs.

Provide Office Administration Duties.

Working Conditions

The incumbent will often work independently, and have sound judgement and problem solving skills.  The work is varied and subject to deadline pressures.  Thus, the incumbent must have the ability to prioritize activities and excellent time management skills.  The position also requires you to have written and verbal communications with members, Board of Directors, committee members, event attendees and the public. Thus, you must have proven excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
