Lab Technician

General Accountability

This position is to work as part of Dr Jan Kycia’s team at the University of Waterloo which is working to develop the SCUBA2 telescope camera. The position is accountable to Dr Jan Kycia and will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the CFI funded projects,“SCUBA-2: A Submillimetre Camera for Astronomy and “Submillimeter Instruments for Astronomy: building on the SCUBA-2 experience”.   

Nature and Scope

The candidate will report directly to Dr Jan Kycia, and will interact with and provide technical support to the graduate students in the research group.  The lab technician will be required to ensure that laboratory supplies are adequately stocked and that equipment is suitably maintained and repaired. The lab technician will be required to perform basic troubleshooting and repair of laboratory equipment and infrastructure, and deal with equipment suppliers as needed to lead to a solution.   The candidate will be required to write-out purchase requisition orders for some equipment and consumable purchases

Statistical Data

The group typically consists of a professor, two lab technicians, one full time graduate student, one undergraduate.

Funding for the CFI funded “Submillimeter Instruments for Astronomy: building on the SCUBA-2 experience” project is expected to extend to Sept 2010.

Working Conditions

This position will be based in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo.  Work will involve running and maintaining equipment in a university laboratory setting.  Some work will involve working with dirty equipment. Deadline pressures could occur.
