Part-Time Circulation Desk Clerk

Primary Purpose

Circulation desk clerks are responsible for providing outstanding customer service at the circulation desks.  These positions may also assume direct student staff during absences of regular supervisors. 

Key Accountabilities:

1. 

Provides outstanding customer service at the circulation desk using a wide variety of technologies

  • Provides circulation desk service i.e. charging, discharging and renewing books; routing library material to correct locations; registering patrons and updating patron files; helping patrons find and access the resources they need; assisting students accessing course reserve material; taking payments with an automated system
  • Provides a miscellany of related services, such as: basic support for public-facing technology such as printing and networking problems; support for micro reader machines; support for different hardware devices available at the service desks for patron use.

2. 

Provides mentoring support to incoming student staff

  • Supports and supplements the training of student staff by providing on-going mentoring at the circulation desks, in conjunction with the Weekend/Evening Supervisor
  • Assumes the direction of student staff during intersession changes and at other times when regular Weekend/Evening Supervisors are unavailable.

3. 

Supports the Circulation Supervisor, Patron Accounts, by assisting with special projects, such as

  • Using Cognos to run reports as needed for special projects
  • Assisting with various patron account-related tasks to help ensure the accuracy of patron data.

Position Requirements

Education:

High school graduate or equivalent education and experience.

Experience:

Must have proven excellent communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service; be a proven self-starter; demonstrated ability to think critically in order to resolve problems quickly and accurately; demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technologies; experience in library operations; knowledge of an online circulation system.

 

Moderate lifting and carrying of library materials is required.

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Internally, communicates with staff in the library to: refer patrons; expand on training; provide service at the desk. Externally, communicates with patrons to provide services and respond to problems, and with campus contacts such as Plant Operations and Campus Police to report problems.

Level of Responsibility:

Ability to work in a team, adhering to established detailed processes, accountable for ensuring student/casual staff perform routine work when acting as a supervisor. Also accountable for projects that may be of a specialized nature.

Decision-Making Authority:

Responsible for problem-solving daily issues. Works with supervisor and others to solve more complex problems.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Minimal demands typical of a position operating within an office environment.

Working Environment:

Minimal exposure to disagreeable conditions typical of a position with responsibility for a time-sensitive activity.
