Primary Purpose
Reporting to the Associate Director, Information Technology, Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), the Computing Support Specialist provides a wide range of information technology services and direct support to the faculty, visiting scholars, researchers, students and staff of the Institute for Quantum Computing. In addition, the Computing Support Specialist also provides primary direct information technology support to the Quantum NanoFabrication facility located in the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre.
Key Accountabilities:
1. |
- Provides information technology services (support, consulting and training) to all members of the institute and to the operational staff of the Quantum NanoFabrication facility.

- Configures and operationally administrates server systems administered within the institute. The key accountability includes (but is not limited to) performing operational account management, installation and ongoing operation of server systems (such as web servers, database systems, computational research software systems), backup and recovery.

- Resolves software and connectivity problems of desktop and server computing systems presented by the membership of the institute.

- Development and Implementation of Systems:
- Actively participates in the development, execution and maintenance of web-based information systems with a unique importance to the institute and/or the Quantum Nanofabrication facility.
- Ensures a high-degree of systems availability through the paced implementation of stable information technologies.

- Undertakes special projects and duties as assigned by the Associate Director, Information Technology, IQC.

Position Requirements
Education:
- Postsecondary education in a field related to information technology and/or equivalent study.
- Minimum of 2 years of recent work experience focused on computing systems support and/or equivalent.
Experience:
- Demonstrable practise with the configuration, deployment, administration and maintenance of Linux operating systems, including the ability to diagnose and resolve networking issues between end-user and server computing systems.
- The ability to install, configuration, administer and use server system technologies such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Nginx, Apache2 and Git.
- Proficient with the user of the supported desktop operating systems used within the institute and the Quantum NanoFabrication facility (macOS, Linux, Microsoft Windows).
- Demonstrable development experience with Python (Django) and/or Ruby (Ruby on Rails)
- Competent at interpreting planning tools such as GNATT and Pert charts.

Nature and Scope
Interpersonal Skills:
- Reports to the Associate Director, Information Technology, Institute for Quantum Computing.
- Creates and maintains knowledge documentation on the information systems within the institute.
- Develops and delivers targeted training on the use of unique technologies within the institute for the benefit of the IQC membership.
- Communicates with the institute’s membership and external support groups via e-mail, request management systems, telephone and in-person.
- Embodies empathy, understanding and sensitivity towards the institute’s membership who are exhibiting stress or anxiety around the use of information technologies.
- Participates in planning with the Associate Director, Information Technology, IQC as required.
- Monitors and reports systems’ statistics to the Associate Director, Information Technology, IQC on a periodic basis.
Level of Responsibility:
- Provides primary computing systems services to IQC members and to the Quantum NanoFabrication facility.
- Ensures the ongoing integrity of all systems managed by the IQC IT team through the application of standard industry methodologies and practises.
Decision-Making Authority:
- Triages requests for computing systems support/services from institute’s members and the Quantum NanoFab facility staff with the goal of achieving a high-level of request closure and end-user satisfaction.
Physical and Sensory Demands:
- Frequent walking and stair climbing is required to reach support areas and other members of the institute within the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre (QNC) and the Research Advancement Centre (RAC) facilities.
- Sensory demands are possible from ongoing background noise generated by computing systems equipment.
- Physical effort is required for periodic lifting (approximately 22kg) and carrying of heavy, bulky computing equipment.
Working Environment:
- This role involves minimal risk resulting from contact with hazardous chemicals or environmental elements.
- Psychological risk factors are possible from stress and/or interactions with the membership (faculty, students, visitors, staff) of the institute, who may consider research as a personal and life-time commitment. Multiple and competing demands for support occur in this fast paced environment.
- Must be able to cope with the pressure to independently and consistently acquire and apply technical knowledge while under time sensitive demands.
- Willingness to work outside the normal work day as required to respond to urgent technology issues and to deploy new technologies is expected of this role.
