General Accountability

The person holding this position will be responsible for maintaining the CFI/OIT-funded research facility for cellular and molecular biology. He/she will finalize setting up the equipment, service it and supervise the facility to ensure that it remains operational and ready to use for experimental work at all times.

Nature and Scope

The CFI/OIT-funded facility comprises a cell culture laboratory, centrifuges and an autoclave, protein chromatography systems, and fluorescence equipment for analytical work for structure and function. The facility is being used by all biochemical research groups in the Department of Chemistry at the university.

While most of the equipment has been installed, the cell culture lab equipment has been received but still needs to be set up and the entire lab brought into usable condition.

The technician must be familiar with all these types of equipment and their experimental uses. The technician will take charge of final installation of the cell culture lab. Furthermore, he/she will manage the entire facility and ensure that it remains in or is promptly restored to working condition at all times. He/she will will report to the principal investigator of the facility (Dr. M. Palmer) and work with all users of the facility to ensure proper use and smooth and efficient operation.

Statistical Data

The equipment in the facility has a value of 750,000 $ Canadian. The number of users amounts to 6 faculty and greater than 20 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and several undergraduate students.
