Fitness Consultant

General Accountability

Under supervision of the Director of UW Fitness, the Fitness Consultant will provide professional services to clients at UW Fitness. UW Fitness provides exercise assessments and programs to a wide variety of clients, specializing training for small groups (Well-Fit, Staff Training, personal clients, elite and recreational athletes). UW Fitness also participates in some research programs housed in Kinesiology

Nature and Scope

Nature and Scope

This person will be responsible for fitness assessments, program development and supervision of clients referred from physicians and self-referred from our community.  They will be responsible for working closely with other staff currently working in UW Fitness in order to provide the highest quality service to these individuals. They will be required to

Statistical Data

Number of classes supervised/week = 15
Number of clients /class – 1 -12 depending
Length of class = 1hour
Number of assessments 3/week

Number of presentations 2/month

Number of client visits/year=4000

Specific Accountabilities

A minimum of an Honours BSc Kinesiology*, CK. Additional personal training certification such as Certified Exercise Physiologist (formerly PFLC) or Exercise Specialist (ACSM) or Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) would be an asset. Must have 2 years experience as a Personal Trainer and experience in working as a fitness consultant for special populations such as cancer survivors, diabetics, cardiac patients would be preferred.   Outstanding communication skills – oral and written is mandatory. Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Web-page and data management.  Interest in participating in research projects is required. First Aid and CPR certifications must be up to date.

*Must be honours BSc in Kinesiology as there is a research and teaching component of the position.

Working Conditions

Physical Effort:

Demonstration and spotting during weight training

Physical Environment:

Working part-time in a gymnasium and part-time at a desk

Empathy, understanding and sensitivity towards clients.

Mental Stress:

Must be able to deal with the pressure of multiple, concurrent demands for service in the fitness environment.
