General Accountability

The Instructor reports to the Chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies and is responsible for teaching and teaching-related duties associated with the undergraduate program. In addition, the Instructor is a member of the department undergraduate admissions committee.

 

The incumbent functions as a full member of the Department:  attends and participates in department meetings, is consulted on and votes on matters of department administration, participates on department committees, may hold some department administrative positions, has full academic responsibility for the courses assigned, and does not perform duties in direct service to faculty members.

Nature and Scope

The Instructor has full academic responsibility for teaching normally five undergraduate courses per year in at least one of the following areas:  Tourism, Therapeutic Recreation, or the Management and Administration of Recreation Services.

 

The incumbent may also supervise undergraduate students completing an Honours Thesis or Directed Study course. The number of students supervised in any given year will vary depending on the number of students completing these courses and their areas of interest.

 

The incumbent will also be responsible for the leadership, coordination, administration and delivery of a required practicum experience for undergraduate students, involving the approval of the practicum supervisor, coordination of any necessary paperwork with the Administrative Coordinator for Undergraduate Studies, review of the students’ goals and objectives, and evaluation of the submitted papers.

 

In addition, the incumbent is a fully contributing member of the department Undergraduate Admissions Committee, assisting with the undergraduate admissions decision-making process.

Statistical Data

The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is one of three departments in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences and offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. Currently the department has 15 regular faculty members, 1 Senior Demonstrator, and 2 staff members. There are approximately 40 graduate students and 400 undergraduate students. The department is well-known and respected in the leisure studies field, with our graduates in high demand. The department operating budget is over $1,500,000  with another $1,000,000 in research funding.

Specific Accountabilities

  1. Full academic responsibility for teaching five undergraduate courses per year in at least one of the following areas:  Tourism, Therapeutic Recreation, or the Management and Administration of Recreation Services. The specific course assignments will be determined together with the Department Chair and the Executive Committee. Responsibilities include the preparation of all course materials, supervision of graduate teaching assistants who assist with grading course papers and exams, and meeting with students during regular office hours to discuss course concepts and academic performance.
