Semiconductor Research Technician

Department:

Giga-to-Nanoelectornics Laboratory, Department of Electrial and Computer Engineering

Effective Date: July, 2011
Grade: USG 6 Reports to: The Giga-to-Nano Electronics Facility Manager

General Accountability

The Giga-to-Nano Electronics Centre (G2N) is searching for a highly self-motivated individual to help support the operations of the Centre’s cleanroom fabrication, device electrical testing, and materials characterization facilities. The successful applicant is accountable to the Giga-to-Nano Electronics Facility Manager, Director of the Giga-to-Nano Electronics Centre and the ECE Lab Director.

The users of the Giga-to-Nano Electronics laboratory fabricate silicon and thin-film components to support research in large-area electronics for applications ranging from flexible displays to medical imagers.Laboratory capabilities include photomask layout and fabrication, photoresist patterning and etching of thin films, low-pressure chemical-vapor and plasma-enhanced depositions, thermal oxidation and diffusion processes, wafer probing and device parameter testing, and back-end packaging. G2N has equipment to carry out extensive DC parameter analysis, C-V and bias-temperature stress measurements, and X-ray excitation, as well as low-temperature studies and surface profiling. The foundry is housed in an environmentally controlled clean-room in the Engineering 3 building of the University of Waterloo.

The successful candidate will report to the G2N Facility Manager. The primary responsibility of the position will be to assist in the operations and maintenance tasks of the facilities. Duties consists of, but not be limited to, working with and assisting Centre users, sustaining and ensuring  adequate laboratory  supplies, performing routine semiconductor processes, and interacting with university support services.

The candidate will possess a certificate from a recognized community college or equivalent experience in a semiconductor fabrication and/or characterization facility. An understanding of the physics of semiconductor devices and their operation would be an asset.

Nature and Scope

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is the largest academic department in the University of Waterloo with 80 faculty members and 360 graduate students and more than 40 administrative staff members. In addition, 420 undergraduate students are admitted each September. The department offers 3 undergraduate degree programs, one in Electrical Engineering, one in Computer Engineering and one in Software Engineering
jointly offered with the School of Computer Science. ECE is a partner in Mechatronics Engineering (offered in conjunction with Mechanical Engineering and Systems Design Engineering), and in Nanotechnology Engineering (offered in conjunction with Chemical Engineering and Chemistry).

Statistical Data

Specific Accountabilities

It is understood that the successful applicant will have considerable flexibility in the organization of the above work and that the position requires a dynamic self-motivated individual to be successful. This position is contingent upon funding.
