General Accountability
The incumbent will report directly to Professor M. Worswick. He/she will be responsible for the technical functions associated with material and structural testing equipment, high strain rate and impact testing equipment, sheet metal forming presses, and metallographic equipment, as well as associated instrumentation and data reduction. This position is subject to availability of research funds.
Nature and Scope
Statistical Data
Specific Accountabilities
- Setup, calibration, operation and maintenance of high strain rate material testing facilities. These include: (i) tensile split-Hopkinson bar with momentum trapping; (ii) compressive split Hopkinson bar; (iii) high velocity gas gun; (iv) other Hopkinson bars (torsional and mini-direct compression).
-
- Setup, calibration, operation and maintenance of sheet metal forming testing facilities including formability presses and friction testing apparatus. Perform FLD testing and springback testing. Operate image analysis-based grid strain measurement systems.
-
- Setup, calibration, operation and maintenance of highly complex electro-hydraulic servo controlled material and structural testing machines and sub-components specializing in the MTS group of instruments.
-
- Setup and operation of instrumentation for the above testing equipment. Construct basic circuits and integrate electronics systems. Application of multi-function data acquisition and control systems including LABVIEW. Acquisition and post-processing of data using statistical analysis and data reduction software including Vu-Point.
-
- Metallographic sectioning, mounting, polishing, etching of tested samples. Optical and SEM microscope examination of samples. Operation of image-analysis based systems for characterization of microstructures.
-
- Instruct and assist undergraduate, graduate and work term students with respect to any laboratory duties and equipment.
-
- Recommend purchase of equipment and components associated with the above apparatus. Assist in the design and construct jigs and fixtures and equipment required to support experiments in this research programme using CADKEY 97 or AutoCAD.
-
- Maintain and implement University safety standards pertinent to his/her duties in the laboratory environment.
