General Accountability

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Environment and Associate Vice President, International, the Director, International Education and Training Programs is responsible for the development of international education programs, training and research opportunities for the Faculty of Environment and providing assistance to Waterloo International related to specific university-wide internationalization initiatives.

Nature and Scope

Specific Faculty of Environment responsibilities include the development of joint undergraduate and graduate education programs with international partners, international student recruitment, co-ordination of international and domestic training activities, identification of international research/development opportunities and provision of assistance to individual faculty members of the Faculty of Environment as required. University-wide responsibilities include acting as the Academic Director for the Ontario-Jiangsu Student Exchange Program, Director of the Nanjing-Waterloo Sino-Canadian College, serving as the University of Waterloo representative to the Board of Directors for the Jiangsu Foundation College, liaising with the Jiangsu Su-On College and assisting in selected international recruitment activities.

The position requires extensive travel, with particular emphasis on China and India, and the ability to work effectively in different cross-cultural contexts, posing significant challenges in the achievement of anticipated targets. Strong inter-personal skills and the ability to adjust to rapidly changing demands and situations are key requisites for the position. Success in achieving targets is often highly dependent on the development of strong personal relationships with key individuals and groups and the capacity to work as a member of a team. The Director, International Education and Training Programs will participate as a member of specific international boards. In addition to external contacts, the incumbent will negotiate program implementation within the University of Waterloo community and will be a member of several committees at the provincial and university levels.

Statistical Data

The Faculty of Environment has established a recruitment target of 100 international students/year through its joint education programs and direct recruitment activities. Anticipated revenue generation to UW is approximately $4 million/year at steady state. The NJU-UW Sino-Canadian College has established a recruitment target of 300 students/year. Anticipated revenue to UW is approximately $10-12 million/year at steady state.

Jiangsu Foundation College:

The Jiangsu Foundation College is a preparatory college for Jiangsu students who plan to do post-secondary training outside China. The College is administered through the Jiangsu Department of Education and has developed a “feeder” system of secondary schools in Jiangsu. The College has established a Board of Directors with representation from several top-ranked international universities, including UW, to provide direction to enhance the programs of the College and ensure quality control. The Director, International Education and Training Programs has been named as UW’s representative to the Board and will be required to:

Working Conditions

The position requires extensive international travel, with particular emphasis on China and India. It is anticipated that the incumbent will travel internationally an average of 4 times per year. Such travel may place a degree of stress on the incumbent as well as close relationships. Development and/or implementation of research or development proposals/projects may require the incumbent to travel to remote areas, increasing the risk of health-related problems. Domestic travel will primarily be associated with the Ontario-Jiangsu Student Exchange Program, including regular trips to participating universities across the province as well as frequent trips to Toronto for various committee meetings and orientation sessions. Deadline pressure for proposal development and recruitment activities, can be significant, requiring effective time management, particularly given the travel requirements for the position.
