General Accountability

The Associate Director – Research reports to the Director of MAREP (Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program). He or she is primarily responsible for the research activities conducted in MAREP but will also assist other MAREP team members with the translation of research into practice through various knowledge translation activities.

Nature and Scope

MAREP was launched in May 1993 at the University of Waterloo under the auspices of the Centre for Applied Health Research in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. In 2004, MAREP became a critical component of the RBJ Schlegel – UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo.

 

MAREP is an innovative program which integrates educational and research activities in an effort to improve dementia care practices in Canada. The goal of MAREP is to enhance the ability of all involved in dementia care, including persons with dementia, their partners in care, and formal care providers, to respond to the needs of persons with Alzheimer Disease and related dementias and ultimately improve the quality of life for persons with dementia and their families. To this end, MAREP conducts rigorous research on psychosocial aspects of dementia and then ensures that research is translated into practice through the development of education and training initiatives.

 

The Associate Director – Research works closely with the Director of MAREP, The Associate Director of Education and Administration, and MAREP Research Associates to fulfil the goals of the program.

Specific Accountabilities

Build and maintain liaison with strategic research partners (e.g., Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Ontario and  its regional chapters, the Ruth Sherman Centre for Research and Education, long-term care facilities, community support agencies, psychogeriatric resource consultants, etc.). The incumbent will continue to develop strong research partnerships consistent with MAREP’s mandate.

Search out funding opportunities and assist in the writing of grant proposals to support MAREP’s research activities.

Coordinate, design and implement MAREP research initiatives (e.g., writing and submitting ethics applications, assisting in gathering and analyzing data, coordinating research assistants, writing final reports, etc.).

Assist with the dissemination of results from MAREP research projects (e.g., presentation at academic and professional conferences, writing of articles for scholarly and professional journals and MAREP’s newsletter, etc.).

Work with other MAREP team members to ensure that those involved in dementia care are made aware of advances in dementia care and in the development of knowledge translation tools.

Serve as an advisor and mentor for research assistants and co-op students working on MAREP research projects and as a resource to graduate and undergraduate students in AHS.

Other duties as determined by the Director and Advisory Committee.
