General Accountability

This position is responsible for the coordination of the Department’s risk management portfolio including the management of the pool, as well as Aquatics and First Aid-related programs.  The incumbent will work as part of the department team and is accountable to the Manager, Campus Recreation with Risk Management direction provided by the Director, Athletics & Recreational Services.

Nature and Scope

Campus Recreation is committed to a positive, diverse set of programs that develop a sense of community, contribute to quality of life, and foster ongoing relationships with and for the students and members. Programs are designed with student needs in mind – cost, scheduling, variety, and varying skills – in order to maximize participation and to ensure a diversity of offerings. Campus Recreation offers more than 175 structured programs in aquatics, first-aid, fitness, clubs, dance, intramurals, wellness, and conditioning. The CR program is overseen and managed by full-time staff and several hundred student employees each term. The degree of participation at Waterloo is very large which necessitates the two athletic buildings to be open from 7 a.m. to 12 midnight, 7 days a week, with the pool opening at 5 a.m., in order to provide the recreational and instructional sports which students demand. In addition, the campus recreation program services a community of Faculty, Staff, Retirees, alumni, and community users.

The Coordinator, Aquatics and Risk Management, is responsible for coordinating the risk management  portfolio within the Department of Athletics, assisting the Director of the Department in the on-going tracking of technical trends, developments and advances in these fields;  providing budgets for Risk Management training and initiatives;

The incumbent will also provides functional direction to Managers and Coordinators within the department on risk management issues such as: ensuring that due diligence is carried out in all areas of risk management and compliance with all federal and provincial regulations and legislation and bylaws applicable to the Department; ensures that all policies, operating procedures, and work methods are updated on a regular basis and are current to industry standards; ensures that all employees are performing in accordance of industry standards, Provincial Health and Safety regulations, as well as to University standards. 

The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of the aquatics and first aid programming in the Department of Athletics and Recreational Services. which includes;  supervise and direct the recruiting, training, work schedules, on-going performance development and administrative requirements for employees in the aquatics, and first aid units; maximizes the use of aquatics facility through program initiatives, partnership arrangements, community resources and special events; consistently introduce viable new program initiatives; remain on the cutting edge of programming, including assessing the changing demographics of our customers and trends. 

The Coordinator, Aquatics & Risk Management, will work closely with the Campus Recreation team, along with the Director, Athletics and Recreational Services; Facilities Manager; Manager, Business Operations; Promotions Coordinator; and other staff to contribute to the advancement of the Department’s goals regarding participation and engagement opportunities.  The Coordinator will also work collaboratively with other on and off campus relationships including but not limited to the Safety Office and the UW Police.
