General Accountability

The Operations Manager, Student Life Centre reports directly to and consults with the Manager, Student Life Centre regarding all operations of the Student Life Centre.

  The Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day administration and financial management of the Student Life Centre Turnkey Desk and transportation operations.  The Operations Manager also assists in the supervision of the Turnkey Staff and is responsible to assist with the recruitment, training and development of this staff.  The Operations Manager oversees all bookings and programming operations within the centre and ensures compliance with all UW and Student Life Centre policies and procedures.

The incumbent will provide excellent leadership to all student staff and create and maintain positive working relationships by establishing a clear set of reasonable expectations. The incumbent will provide support and direction in key administrative tasks, including but not limited to recruitment, training and evaluation of all student staff and participate in the administration of certain department-wide responsibilities including special events and special projects.  The incumbent is responsible for developing key partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Key campus partners include but are not limited to Federation of Students, Registrar’s Office, Office of Development and Alumni, Plant Operations, UW Police Services, Health Services, in order to accomplish the above.  External stakeholders include SLC tenants and corporate vendors.

Nature and Scope

Traditionally considered the "living room" of the campus, the SLC/Turnkey Desk is the gathering place of students. The Student Life Centre (SLC) is the community center of the University, serving students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests. The SLC is an organization offering a variety of programs, activities, services, and facilities that, when taken together, represent a well-considered plan for community life. 

The Operations Manager reports directly to The Manager, Student Life Centre and supports the objectives of the Manager and the SLC Management Board.  The Operations Manager assists in all aspects of the management of the Student Life Centre, a 120,238 square foot facility which operates on a 24 hour basis, 365 days a year with an annual operating budget of $800,000.

The Operations Manager will work collaboratively with all campus partners to implement a variety of programs and to support programming initiated by on and off campus clients.  The Operations manager is responsible for all bookings within the Student Life Centre.

The Operations Manager will administer the Transit Sales program, and this includes daily liaison with GO Transit, Greyhound, Coach Canada and Grand River Transit for administrative and operational procedures.  This includes reporting and remittance to the carriers on a weekly or monthly basis.

The incumbent will perform all daily accounting responsibilities and assist in the preparation of financial reports.  The Operations Manager assists the SLC Manager in maximizing revenues, controlling expenditures and improving internal systems on an ongoing basis.

The Operations Manager assists in the supervision of up to 34 part time student staff (Turnkeys) who are responsible for the operation of the Turnkey Desk and monitoring the use of the facility.  One full time work-study or cooperative student reports directly to the Operations Manager.

The Operations Manager acts as a resource for students, student groups, clubs and societies and university department heads by assisting in the planning and implementation of events and ensuring compliance with all UW and SLC Guidelines and Policies.

This position participates in the monthly meetings of the SLC Management Board and may serve on other committees as required by the Student Life Centre Manager.  Reporting to the Operations Manager:

Working Conditions

This position may require some evening and weekend work and long hours.  The incumbent will occasionally work under tight deadlines. 

The incumbent is on call to assist in any staff working issues on a 24 hour basis. Must have the ability to multi-task and work in a loud and diverse student-centred environment. This position may also require some heavy lifting.

Management challenges consist of maintaining an effective student staff and dealing with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty while maintaining excellent relations amongst tenants and effectively managing spontaneous and unexpected situation.
