General Accountability

The position reports directly to the Department Chair for design, development, and implementation of department web pages.  This position reports directly to the Instructor for the following responsibilities:  the organization, maintenance, and control of Physics demonstration equipment.  The position acts independently in the development of new demonstrations.  The position provides technical support to the Department.   

Nature and Scope

The position is responsible for the design, development and implementation of department web pages, and where appropriate, for providing assistance with teaching and research web pages.  The position is directly responsible for the demonstration and teaching laboratory equipment of the Department.  This demonstration equipment, used in lectures and undergraduate labs, is an essential component of the undergraduate teaching program.

Specific Accountabilities

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR DEMONSTRATION EQUIPMENT

  1. Responsible for the organization and storage of the demonstration equipment.  The administration of a catalogue inventory and sign-out system will be required in order to control the loan and return of equipment.
  2. Initiating and assisting in the on-going development of existing demonstrations as well as initiating and assisting in the creation of new demonstrations.
  3. Responsible for arranging maintenance of demonstration equipment, performing periodic inspections and minor repairs as necessary.
  4. Moving and setting up equipment, often on short notice, in the Physics building as well as in other locations as necessary.
  5. Provide further faculty support during lectures such as:  moving and operating audio-visual equipment on short notice, assisting with ordering of equipment and supplies for demonstrations.
  6. Liaison with secondary schools and other university departments to supply them with technical advice and equipment to support students/teachers/faculty with science projects and teaching requirements.

  8. Responsible for the maintenance of all aspects of department web pages.
  9. Responsible for the development, design and implementation of new department web pages and the upgrading of existing web pages.
  10. Responsible for providing assistance, when requested by the chair, to individual faculty members for individual teaching and research group web pages.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE LABORATORIES

  1. Assist in the set-up of laboratory experiments.
  2. Arrange necessary repairs to undergraduate laboratory equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO DEPARTMENT

  1. Maintain all the displays in the Physics building, including the photograph boards, the framed posters, and the glass fronted cabinets.
  2. Move furniture and equipment within the building as necessary.
  3. Provide assistance to research groups as required, such as rearrangement of apparatus, unpacking and setting up of equipment.
  4. Interview and supervise co-operative education students to provide general assistance to the position.
  5. Perform community outreach duties such as visiting schools to promote science education.
  6. Other duties of a technical nature, subject to the approval of the Department Chair, may be performed by the incumbent as the departmental need arises, and time and competence permit.
