Description of General Framework and Environment:
The production facility of Graphics has 5 areas of emphasis: project co-ordination, pre-production, digital production, offset production and the bindery. The facility is equipped with two Docutech 6180’s, DT 135, DC 12, MOZP 2, PrintMaster, and various other single colour presses. Other equipment includes an in-line booklet maker and extensive computer equipment including 2 DigiPaths Our facility is also equipped with a Print Management System to manage inventory, collect data, price and bill customer accounts. During regular periods, production occurs 7:00am – 4:30pm, Monday – Friday. During rush periods, these hours could be extended to include weekends and shifts run 24 hours a day. It is expected that members of the Production team will work overtime when required.

Specific Accountabilities
The Lead Hand, Bindery prioritizes jobs, ensuring their timely and quality completion. The lead hand leads, hires, evaluates and trains a team of full-time and casual bindery staff. He/she is also responsible for ensuring that the unit’s equipment is serviced properly and that the unit has adequate supplies to complete their jobs.
- Set daily job priorities and ensure that the bindery team follows those priorities
- Train & supervise bindery staff
- Notify Production Manager about scheduling problems and staff issues and recommend action
- Assist in interviewing & scheduling of casual staff
- Assist in performance evaluation of full-time.
- Act as primary contact for service staff. Schedule service calls to repair technicians when necessary.
- Train and act as resource to other staff members operating electronic publishing equipment elsewhere on campus.
- Ensure deadlines are met by scheduling overtime, additional staff or out-sourcing, if necessary.
- Responsible for accurate finishing (binding) of all jobs.
- Order all supplies: rings, machine supplies, office supplies etc.
- Knowledgeable and skilled in the operation of all bindery equipment.

- Graphics production and office staff located at Main Graphics.
- All copy center staff, including Manager of Copy Centres.
- UW Faculty and Staff.
- Bookstore & Central Stores shipping & receiving staff

- Vendors (suppliers, equipment repair)
