General Accountability

The Undergraduate Advisor and Program Administrator reports to the Administrative Manager and is under the academic direction of the Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies, Department of Geography and Environmental Management. Provides administrative support for 21 faculty members, sessional instructors and is responsible for day-to-day management of the undergraduate programs. This position has responsibilities in the Faculty of Environment and the Faculty of Arts undergraduate programs, as well as administering the NEW: Geomatics Plans and the Geography and Aviation Plans and the CHINA 2 + 2 Program and the Sustainable Local Economic Development Option.

Nature and Scope

The Undergraduate Advisor and Program Administrator is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the undergraduate programs, in a manner consistent with the department’s goals and objectives. The incumbent is aware of ongoing department and undergraduate activities, and maintains a professional attitude, initiative, and flexibility in all interactions.  It is the responsibility of the Undergraduate Advisor and Program Administrator to provide consistent and accurate academic advice on policies and procedures related to the university. A working knowledge of the University of Waterloo policies and procedures and their implementation as they relate to the undergraduate program is required.

This position requires problem-solving and organizational skills with the ability to work with minimal supervision.  The Undergraduate Advisor and Program Administrator must have capabilities as a self-directed organizer and communicator and have the ability to negotiate appropriate arrangements for student issues. Students seek assistance during peak times for course selection, registration, graduation requirements and as necessary during the academic year. Confidentiality is maintained for all undergraduate student records in the regular, distance education, co-op and exchange programs a system total of approximately 630 undergraduate students.

Statistical Data

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management is one of five units in the Faculty of Environment. Currently the department consists of 21 Faculty, 1 Lecturer, 18 Adjunct Faculty, 13 Cross Appointments, 4 Post-Doctoral Fellows, 3 Visiting Scholars, 5 Support Staff and approximately 6-8 Sessionals. There are currently 630 undergraduate students including 57 in the Geomatics Program, 61 in the Aviation Program and 15 in the China 2+2 Program.
