Primary Purpose

The Course Materials Manager is accountable to the Director, Retail Services for effective  oversight of course materials adopted at uWaterloo, ensures course materials availability meet timelines, and achieve customer service expectation as the trusted source for course materials.   The  priorities for the manager is to ensure the provision of academic content through traditional resources, digital delivery or emerging technology methods meet course adoption requirements, support student success and facilitate the mission of the University.

Key Accountabilities:

The Book Store is a significant source for academic content and service delivery for students and faculties.  The Book Store supports the development of course materials adopted by faculty that foster quality teaching and learning by working collaboratively with all stakeholders. 

This position reports to the Director, Retail Services and the incumbent is a member of the Retail Services management team that identifies opportunities for new academic services, support and continual improvement that impact teaching , learning and student success.   Retail Services business units are comprised of the Book Store, CampusTech, ESmart, Waterloo Store, Write Stuff and New Media Services.  The department is an ancillary operation that must maintain financial viability while delivering the highest quality customer service and meeting customer expectations for technology enhanced services.

The incumbent manages the course material adoption functions for undergraduate, graduate courses including courseware and custom printed books in the Book Store (Espresso Book Machine) or in New Media Services.    The incumbent identifies opportunities for integration of traditional content delivery with digital delivery to support contemporary pedagogy.  

Positions reporting to the manager are the Course Material Specialist, Courseware Co-ordinator, and part-time casual staff.

In consultation with the Retail Services Operations Administrator, the incumbent facilitates application of technology resources within Retail Services or integration of technology resources from campus store industry for enhancement of content delivery such as print on demand books, ebooks, and access pin codes through point of sale system.

The incumbent keeps up to date on educational technology applications, academic publishers, teaching and learning resources, and copyright policies.  The Course Materials manager is an active liaison between the Book Store and faculty, serves on campus committees and facilitates ongoing communication between the Library, CTE, CEL, and other academic support units.

The incumbent develops and leverages relationships both internal and externally with the goal to promote the services of the Book Store, co-ordinate and collaborate with faculty or academic support staff to enhance student success.

 

Position Requirements

Education:

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 

Experience:

Demonstrated experience in course materials management including alternatives to traditional print material, digital content delivery, emerging technology, and open source content.  Competencies will include interpersonal, public relations, negotiation, technical, and communication skills.
