General Accountability

This position is accountable to the Administrative Officer, the Chair and the Associate Chair within the Department of Biology.

Nature and Scope

The Department of Biology’s administrative structure consists of the Chair, the Associate Chair and the Administrative Officer. The Financial Manager – Research and Contracts will provide financial assistance to all faculty members pertaining to individual research accounts. This will include assisting with the writing and editing of grant applications, budget set-up, account reconciliation and aiding in the generation of progress reports to the granting agencies. The incumbent will be responsible to oversee all research grants and contracts and report any concerns to the grant/contract holder, the Chair and the Administrative Officer.

Statistical Data

The Department of Biology has 35 faculty members, 3 instructors, 12 undergraduate officers and 2 graduate officers. There are 6 administrative support staff and 12 technical support staff. The Department offers programs in Honours Biology, Honours Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Biomedical Sciences and currently teaches approximately 6500 undergraduate students each term. The Department also has a graduate enrollment of approximately 120 MSc and PhD students, and currently hires approximately 100 – 150 undergraduate and graduate TA’s per term to aid in undergraduate course delivery.

The departmental operating budget is approximately six million dollars and total research income exceeds  five million dollars.
